[Silence.

There's too much of it. It burns into his mind, the echo of emptiness in the corner of it, that ache he can't seem to brush aside no matter how he tries to distract himself. He's tried going outside, he's tried burying himself in that braille stuff Xion gave him, he's tried striking up conversations with his housemates (even the animals), but he runs out of things to say far too quickly and in the back of his mind it's always there. The silence, the echo. The fact that something is missing.

Dead.

And then he's had enough.

The journal's camera is partially obscured when the feed flickers on, and what it does show is his face - eyes, a flash of red hair, his bangs down - just enough to make it seem like he's not quite himself. His voice, too, is softened; it's not as open and friendly as Luke would have been when greeting the village, but it lacks the usual anger or pent-up frustrations of the socially-awkward soldier. If anything it sounds... hushed, weary, tinged with a bit of desperation. He needs this. Whether or not he wants to do it is irrelevant.

It hurts. The silence hurts, more than last time when Luke had been sent home, and he honestly hadn't thought it would.]

Tell me about your day. Tell me a story. Talk about anything. Today I'm listening.

[He might not care. He might not be nice about it. He might not even remember it later. But he'll listen.

He just needs to hear something, so he can forget about the nothing in his head for a while.]

They did! It became a race for immortality. The evil Commandant used his influence in the government and the knights to gain information on the greatest treasure. However, when he finally found the place the treasure was hidden, he arrived to find that the pirate queen was already there, waiting for him. She'd beaten him to the prize. Do you know why?

[It's Kouki's favourite example of his ridiculous life.]

The demon god, Beldr, and his mother dreamt about his death. Because of this, his mother went around and get every object on earth to give their vow to never hurt him. But she never ask the mistletoe, either because it's too unimportant and nonthreatening, or too young to make a vow.

Other than that, Beldr's pretty much invincible to everything.

[Geez, so defensive, Asch.]

What kind of books?

Oh no, Fish is my chicken. I named her that since we named our fish, Dog.

[He stops for a moment.]

I suppose our house was very strange for awhile.

I've heard that's true for a lot of places.

I don't know yet. ...It seemed to be so, because people from my future were here. So we must have succeeded somehow.

I have seen so many strange and unusual things in my world, all because of this journey. That...is worth it, to me, as long as we can restore our world again.

[It's a great story, stop with your silly questions.]

Yes! Exactly. A castle full of spells and magic, and there was all the food she could want and the finest clothing she could imagine. The bear didn't talk much, but when he did, he was kind and somber. Every night when the daughter would blow out her candle and lie down sleep, the bear would turn back to the shape of a man and go to sleep beside her. But because of the darkness she never saw his face, and she was too afraid to light a candle to see him.

That is, until...she gets homesick, and the bear agrees to let her return home for one day. When she's there, her eldest sister convinces her that the bear must be a troll, but she'll only know if she lights a candle to look at his face at night.

[Miyabi watches Asch quietly, and looks away, hunching up her shoulders somewhat. Gods, what is she even doing, imposing on Asch when he's still struggling, too? She shouldn't even be here, it's...it's not fair to Asch. Shaking her head, Miyabi tries to find her voice, wiping at her eyes before she starts to cry all over again.]

N-No...it's fine. Don't-- [A gasp, and then a sniffle.] ...I'm sorry.

What? It's not like she ate the pea. She slept on it.

Well, I'll admit that it's certainly...unorthodox. And definitely not the nicest method of choosing a bride-to-be. Who cares what she can or can't sleep on?

Oh sure. My oldest granddaughter's got me going to the library, so I have a book here full of different stories to try out. It's called "Myths of the Ancient Greeks". I'll look for the happiest-looking story I can find!
