There is speculation that the cycle was altered in order to provide enough of a resistance force for the intruders. That the whole thing was orchestrated.

It's likely. We knew about the intruders a long time ago, and if they were building up an army outside the barrier, it's only logical that the Malnosso would build a resistance as well.
