[Asch scowls a little, but it's without any real venom or rage; more like a bitter scowl, still pining for what he seriously lacks in his life right now.]

I wouldn't be stealing it! It should be mine anyway, so I'd just- I'd be taking it back! Why can't it be me? Why is it always you?

[There's a sliver of desperation in his voice, a pained tinge he can't quite erase.]

I don't know! Why do you always think I want any of this?!

[Right then, he is so very close to just giving up and letting Asch have the name. There's pain in his chest and he knows why - it's sympathy and hurt and guilt. It's always been there, ever since he learned he was a replica of Asch, and ever since he realized what he took from him. And it's stronger than ever.

But... not yet, not yet. Not when everyone's acting so strange. Asch could... very well be doing the same thing.]

And look what you're doing to yourself! You took my clothes, and you're even trying to copy the way I cut my hair! You never wanted that before, why do you want it now?! Why now and not two weeks ago?!

[He isn't angry either; it's that desperate tone, that pained tinge, making their voices near identical.]

I- [And that makes Asch falter, hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. Why... why does he have to question it!? Why does he have to ask!? It's his name, it's always belonged to him, it was stolen, so why...

...why is he asking for it now...?

Isn't it his right? Isn't this what he's always wanted? The life he could never have lived after his kidnapping... isn't that what he's after now?

Why didn't he take it when Luke offered before?]

...I... couldn't say it before. I couldn't ask. Everything was too different... there's no going back. I couldn't move forward if I kept focusing on the past all the time...

[Though that's what he ended up doing anyway. Maybe that's why it was always so painful.]

Then why are you focusing on the past now? What happened to make you feel like this?

... Was it those things in our journals?

[It's the only thing Luke can think of. It's why he acted weird, so now... maybe...

Why was Luke so reluctant, anyway? It wasn't just because of the fact that Asch might kill him for it later, not just because he wants to keep his name. For once... he's actually thinking of what he wants rather than what Asch once. This... rarely ever happens with him. And he's so torn about what to do that he can't help clenching his fists to hide the tremors.]

The journals...?

[Asch pauses, lips pursing, and reluctantly takes a step back, away from Luke, to tug his journal from a pocket and flip it open. It can't possibly be that simple, can it? Just a simple little line in the-

[...why does he feel so... disappointed?]

[... Oh.

Now Luke feels even worse. He reaches out his hand again, as if to touch his shoulder once more, before he slowly fists his hand and brings it back down to his side. Luke had learned of what the journal was doing to them back when he kept confessing his "love" to all the males of the village, and kept scrambling to explain himself. It was the only explanation he could think of.]

Do you...? [Does he still want his name back now? Does he... want his identity back?]

[Asch probably takes a little too long to respond, mulling over the situation quietly. This isn't something he thinks about much, mostly because he'd already made his choice. Or at least... he thought he'd made it. It had been so much easier to push it to the back of his mind before...

Stupid Malnosso... stupid journals. Stupid experiments.

...Stupid replica.

And that last thought gives him some small semblance of normalcy, a comfort that pushes him into finally speaking up again.]

Just... forget it. Forget everything.

[Luke purses his lips and lowers his head to stare down at the ground, and it takes him a moment to respond as well. He doesn't want Asch to just walk away feeling this way. To think that it was all fake... He doesn't want Asch to feel like a fool. And... what if, deep down, he really...?]

Ask me later. [He shuts his eyes. It's hard to say this. It's very hard to say this, knowing what may happen later.] I told you I'd give you the name if you wanted it, and I'm not going back on that. But I want to make sure it's real. [He finally forces his eyes open to look up at him, though he has to clench his fists instead.] I don't want to give it to you because of some stupid experiment. I want to give it to you because you want it, without anything else making you want it back.

[Ask him later? He hadn't really been asking in the first place. Asch does give it a little more consideration, though, setting the words sink in, really weighing them against the alternative- that is, once again demanding the name or just outright taking it. He could do that, after all. It's his. It... it was his.

But... he won't be a thief. Not like Van, or the replica, or anyone else who'd taken his life away. That isn't him. It isn't...]

...Fine. I'll ask you later, then.

[...No, he won't.]
