[It starts with a hum.
It's quiet, barely perceptible, like a fruit fry buzzing away in someone's ear. Across the village, it starts flickering to life in the mind of one Luke fon Fabre, miles away, awake and unaware and waiting for it.
The hum becomes a whisper. Wordless noise. An echo of something that used to be alive and loud and binding. Intrusive, almost, and yet not- because something missed, needed, eagerly and anxiously awaited is rarely unwanted.
The whisper becomes words, messy and jumbled and confused, a thought process born of desperation, fear, pain, loneliness. The words of the dead, or the dying, or the living. Of all three at once.
I'm here.

Alive. Alive.
And calling for him.]
[It's much later - after he's found, after he's awake and aware of his new situation - that Asch finally touches the journal. He toys with the controls, flips through the pages quietly, listening to everything that's open to hear. It feels... startlingly normal. Just your average day in Luceti. Life does go on without you- but then, he knew that long ago. This is nothing new.
...Well, almost nothing. It's hard to do much of anything when you can't see the world you're used to seeing around you. Not for the first little while, anyway. By touch and trial-and-error he finds the camera eventually, and he scribbles out a bit of nonsense in what he thinks is the entry area that almost looks like words, he sends out a few misfired comments to complete strangers, and in the end he thinks the entire journal system isn't nearly user-friendly enough. Eventually he gives up and sets it aside, leaving it open. Just. Listens.
It's not much. But for the moment, it'll do.]
((ooc: okay so here's the deal- Asch is back from the dead and blind. He'll be in the clinic for a while while he gets used to it, so feel free to use this post as a catch-all in case people want to visit/stumble upon him for the entire week. His scribble entry is also sort-of posted with a slightly-obscured picture, so if you'd rather use the voice function to bug him, feel free |D Word will probably get around that he's back one way or another.
Luke may or may not be with him depending on the time of visit; more often than not, he will be
action;
...I see. And what will you do?
action;
Whatever I can. Believe it or not, I don't have any experience when it comes to being blinded. I don't have all the answers.
action;
[What else could he do?]
Sometimes that's the best way to do things, anyway.
action;
[What's he supposed to say to that, "thanks for the advice"? He's already figured that much out. She's obviously still uncomfortable, though, and he hasn't decided whether twitchy company is better or worse than being left alone for hours on end, so he tries to shift the topic. The pie's making him realize that he's hungry.]
You said you brought pie.
action;
[Yes, pie. That's a much easier thing to talk about. And as she places it on the nearest table to start cutting it, she'll try to think about more things to talk about that aren't...blindness and death.]
action;
He does quietly prod Tsuae off his lap, causing the cat to meow pitifully and jump down off the bed, wandering over to Rapunzel and rub against her legs.]
action;
I didn't realize you were a cat person. [There's the sound of a faint smile in her voice as she goes back to the pie, lifting out a piece with the knife and placing it on one of the plates she brought with her.]
action;
[His tone of voice doesn't seem too bothered by it, though, and there's obviously no lost love between the two.]
action;
The memories chills her, so she forces it away, placing a plate of pie in his hands.]
Luke cares about you very much. [It's a statement of fact.]
action;
[He says it without hesitation, though his hands clench a little in his blanket. He knows. He knows it all too well. He's felt the replica's pain through their link ever since he returned to life.]
Death is temporary in Luceti. He had no reason to panic about it.
action;
He only wanted to save you from pain. [And now, four months of blindness.] I don't think that's idiotic at all. I'm sure you would have done the same thing for him.
action;
[Despite his words, he looks visibly uncomfortable about it; Luke's response to his death - at least, what he's noticed of it - has been bothering him. The loss of their fonic link obviously hit him harder than expected.]
He's... too extreme.
action;
[That's a trait she finds very admirable, unsurprisingly. Anyone who follows their heart...]
It's okay to be emotional. [Even if last week Luke had seemed pretty drained of it.] Maybe...that's his way of dealing with things. By being extreme instead of keeping things buried deep.
action;
[If it hasn't already. This week has thus far been pretty telling.]
action;
And a thought strikes her.]
...Do you like to read?
action;
action;
I-I could read to you! If you would like. I've always loved reading stories, and if it would help you...I'd be more than happy.
action;
The next question is whether or not his pride will allow for it. Stalling tactics is a go!]
...I... don't have any books here.
action;
action;
And speaking of pie, he's... going to attempt to eat his. Slowly, so he doesn't end up with blueberry all over his chin. It's hard to eat when you can't see your own utensil.]
action;
What if I came back tomorrow to read to you?
action;
[Stubborn. He remembers this about her.]
action;
I won't force you into anything you don't want to do. But if it'll make you happy, of course I will.
action;
[There is twist of unease and resignation in his tone, finally getting a bite of the pie. He's not really giving her a clear answer of yes or no, though- he'll leave that up to her. He's still got his pride, dammit.]
...Your baking's good.
action;
You think so? [There's the sound of a smile in her voice.] I'm so glad.
