Christ boy, and you say I don't like my age?! My grandson's twenty-two and you two look pretty similar in age. He does wanna grow a beard either. I guess gals these days don't like facial hair... What a shame.

It's not a bad thing to look older than you are. Four years isn't that much of a difference in age, either.

Because back where I'm from there hasn't been any proper nobles in a long, long time. I think that's why manners died out.

How can there not be nobles? Did their families die out?

Nah, the people tried to replace them with this whole 'equality' idea. Most nations now practice some government called a 'democracy' or something like that now. Based on the Greeks way back whenever.

Equality between the peasants and the nobles? ... Huh. So it is possible...

They don't even use those titles anymore; for the most part they consider them 'archaic.' Most of the governing types these days are elected and whatever monarchies remain in various human nations are mostly just for show.

Christ, they even consider nations that still have proper nobles and monarchs to be 'backwards.'

It's hard to imagine a world like that. The entire society on my world is based around rank and religion.

That's the way mine was a few centuries ago. Man, I still remember those days... humans killed each other over their interpretation of the Bible, the one big holy book.

But these days even religion is dying out.

...that's how Auldrant was with the Score... but we've given that up, now.

Well I guess that's useful for humans. I bet the Lord ain't too happy he lost a lot of followers though.

By the way, what's a Score?

The Score is a prophecy distributed by the Order of Lorelei and given to the people of Auldrant on their birthday, to dictate how their life should be for the next year. It explains everything that happens in the history of the world, whether it's births, deaths, or even wars. It's always been accurate, which is why people follow the Order.

...Oh Christ alive, that sounds boring. I mean I can see how folk might depend on that, but that almost takes the fun outa' living.

Plus if a buncha cloth-wearing types control it'd cause a ton of conflicts.

That's why the Score's been dismissed. It was proven wrong through replication this year, so the world's history has changed. There's no reason to follow the Score anymore. People are just stubborn.
