What was it like? Your home, your family... I read about it in my old history books, but they can't compare.

My family was one of the longest lines in the Malkuth empire, and we practically had our own culture. Hod was kind of removed, after all, so it was almost like we were our own country sometimes.

I remember that. Count Gardios was like the governor of Hod, wasn't he? Or at least the one in charge.

Mm, yeah. Like your father and Belkend, but a little more hands-on than that.

[Guy swings his leg a bit.] I don't remember a lot; it was so long ago, and I was so little. I remember going out to sea with my family a few times, and I remember when my mother taught me how to swim. I remember Van singing to me, and he and Mary playing with me while Father met with the officials that would come every so often. Just little tidbits here and there.

If I was as pathetic as I was when I was small, my father probably would have. He wouldn't stand for a Gardios to be a whiner.

You were really that bad? It's hard to imagine.

I cried a lot; I was very spoiled. I was the only male heir to the Gardios name, after all, and I suppose Father might have had something to do with it. It was mostly Mother and Mary, though.

Mother was like that with me sometimes, when she wasn't ill. She thought I was the only child she'd ever have, so she wanted to give me everything. Father scolded her for it, but he always let her do it.

Mothers love their sons. That's not a nobility thing.
